About Rabbi Doug Sagal

Rabbi Isi was captured during a riot. Rabbi Yohanan said, “The dead man shall be wrapped in his sheet.” Rabbi Shimon ben Lakish said, “Whether I kill or am killed, I will go and rescue him.   He used his might and rescued him.  (Y. Terumot 8 daf 46 bet/4)

Shalom!  I am Doug Sagal, Senior Rabbi of Temple Emanu-El in Westfield, New Jersey.  I am blessed to serve a wonderful congregation of loving people.  In addition, for the last twenty years, I have trained as an amateur boxer, mostly  under the tutelage of the great coach Jamal Abdullah.  Here is  Coach Jamal himself with his heavyweight Joe Hanks who originally fought out of my gym.

I currently train out of Gladiator’s Gym, Orange and regularly work the pads with Coach Herm Ingram.  I have been fortunate to have had some other great teachers, such as Estaban Rodriguez, Hanif Knight, Bilal Crosby, and the great Cleve Lowman, who first taught me how to box.

Here is the Jerusalem Boxing Club where I have trained and  sparred as recently as this summer.  http://www.luxboxing.org/general-e.htm

Thank you for visiting my blog and considering my Torah thoughts.

I am a proud graduate of Wesleyan University, Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, Yale Divinity School, and blessed to learn at the Shalom Hartman Institute in Jerusalem

I study Torah, and I can throw a great left jab.  Not a bad combination!

  1. Hooray for your blog! I loved seeing you on the “Constitution USA” program on PBS, and wonder if perhaps you have a portrait somewhere that’s aging for you, as you appear not to have changed in eleven years!

  2. I just saw Rabbi Doug being by his younger brother Peter as part of Peter’s PBS series “Constitution USA” – David Billig class ’80 Governor Livingston H.S.

  3. Shalom Aleichem,

Rabbi, well done, using the instrument of Boxing to share THE TORAH, reaching those that look up to you as a ROLE MODEL.

    Sar Shalom,

    HRH Dr Bishop Chris Kember
    World Chairman UN& ICG
